First Oil Well In North America

Drilled in 1814 in an effort to find salt, Silas Thorla and Robert McKee struck oil where deer were know to lick. At first the substance was a nuisance and bottled for tonic, then later used as heating and lamp oil. The site was recently certified by the State of Ohio as a Great Ohio Adventure of Learning and is marked by an Ohio Historical Marker. The site has also been featured on PBS Television.
